Blood test basics

Referenzbereich

In one sentence

The Referenzbereich is the range printed next to each blood value on your lab report, and it shows where the values of most healthy people fall. It belongs to the laboratory that ran the test, so it is an orientation rather than a verdict.

Next to every value on a lab report there is a range, the Referenzbereich, sometimes called Normwerte. It describes where the values of most healthy people fall, and by convention it covers about 95 percent of a healthy comparison group.

That definition has a calming consequence, because around 1 in 20 values from perfectly healthy people falls outside the range by pure statistics. On a report with 18 values, like a großes Blutbild, one small outlier is expected rather than alarming.

Three things change how you should read your own range:

  1. The range belongs to the laboratory that ran your test, because labs use different machines and methods, so compare your value against the range printed on your own report rather than a table from the internet.
  2. Some ranges depend on age and sex, which is why the same value can be normal for one person and flagged for another.
  3. Values change with everyday life, so infections, sport, stress, fluid intake and the time of day all leave traces.

A value outside the range is a reason to look again at the whole pattern, ideally with a clinician who knows your history, because on its own it is not a diagnosis.

This glossary entry is general information, not medical advice, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat or rule out any condition. Discuss your own results with a clinician who knows your history.
